Latina actress Rosario Dawson is very well known for all her humanitarian efforts. She is often seen rallying with Voto Latino to get people to register and vote, but this time the actress decided to join another worthy cause.
On Monday, in the heart of New York Times Square, Dawson kicked off SodaStream’s Inaugural “Unbottle the World Day,” to help combat the dangers of bottles and can waste in the environment.
“Plastic bottles and aluminum cans are choking our planet: every day, nearly 1 billion bottles and cans end up in parks, rivers, oceans and landfills worldwide,” said Dawson. “Sadly just one third of beverage containers are recycled in this country,” she continued. “You can make a difference by reducing and avoiding using single use containers, or drink water, or make soda from your tap when you can, instead of buying bottled drinks.”
The multi-ethnic actress accompanied by her mother joined in with supporters in chanting, “Unbottle the World Day.”
She was surprised to learn that the average family of 4 will consume over 10,000 bottles and cans in a 5 year period, so she encouraged the crowd to make a difference in the environment.

The “Unbottle the World” movement was brought after 20 new environmental exhibits around the world were unveiled, and after a large social media presence. It also called upon the United Nations to establish a “Bottle Free Day” to raise awareness.
SodaStream is a social movement organization that fights against the dangers of plastic bottle and aluminum can pollution. The company has an innovative home carbonation system that offers consumers an alternative to using cans and bottles in the home.
The company’s bottles are made from BPA-free PET plastic, usable for up to 3 years and recyclable after it has reached its life span. According to SodaStream, their product can replace up to 2,000 traditional plastic store-bought bottles and help eliminate the need for new materials used to manufacture and transport bottles and cans.
The environmentally friendly company’s mission is to “create a global community, celebrating the bold achievement of a cleaner, healthier planet – made possible by each of us embracing simple, fun, responsible consumption.”
SodaStream products can be found in 50,000 retail stores around the world.
